How much does outdoor digital signage cost?

Outdoor digital signage costs £4,000 to £15,000 per screen installed for a high-bright outdoor LCD, or £1,500 to £4,000 per square metre for direct-view LED, with £1,500 to £6,000 on top for civils and structure on most projects. The premium over indoor signage pays for an IP65 or IP66 weatherproof enclosure, a 2,500 to 5,000 nit sun-readable panel, heating and cooling, and the concrete base or structural mount that holds it up.

From the floor. The factor that catches first-time outdoor buyers out is solar loading on the panel during a UK heatwave. A 3,500 nit panel facing south at midday in late June will trigger its thermal protection and dim itself, sometimes the whole screen blanks for an hour, and the client thinks the unit has failed. The cure is at design stage: pick a panel rated for higher operating temperatures, or angle the totem 15 degrees off true south so the worst of the load comes off the glass. There are two technology choices, and the size you need decides between them:

TechnologyTypical useSizesUK install cost
High-bright outdoor LCDPetrol forecourt menus, drive-thru boards, bus shelters, wayfinding32" to 86"£4,000 to £15,000 per screen
Direct-view LED (dvLED)Building facades, large advertising, stadium perimeter, large wayfinding2m+ in any module shape£1,500 to £4,000 per square metre

Outdoor LCD is what most UK retail and hospitality outdoor signage uses up to 86 inches. Samsung OHF/OHB, LG XS-series and Philips Q-Line outdoor models are the typical specifications: an IP66-rated enclosure, a 2,500+ nit panel, anti-reflective glass, internal heating for cold mornings and active cooling for direct sun. Within the range, size and brightness set the price; a 46" bus-shelter unit sits at the bottom, an 86" drive-thru totem at the top.

Direct-view LED takes over above 86 inches because LCD cannot be made bigger than that economically or reliably. dvLED is modular, built from 500mm by 500mm cabinets in any size or shape, with the pixel pitch chosen for viewing distance: P3 or P4 for close-viewing wayfinding, P6 or P8 for facade-distance advertising, P10 and above for stadium perimeter where viewers are 30m or more away. Finer pitch costs more per square metre.

The hidden cost on an outdoor digital signage install is groundwork and structure. A freestanding totem needs a concrete base, ducted cabling and often a planning application; a building-mounted screen needs structural calculations and may need MEWP access for service. Budget £1,500 to £6,000 on top of the screen for civils and structure, and allow 8 to 16 weeks for planning rather than the 2 to 3 weeks an indoor install takes.

Service is also dearer: an outdoor screen is often a MEWP, traffic management and a four-hour weather window rather than a two-person ladder job. Specify a four-year on-site warranty and a maintenance contract from day one.

Quick reference: outdoor LCD £4k-£15k per screen installed (32-86"), dvLED £1.5k-£4k per square metre, civils and structure £1.5k-£6k on top; allow 8-16 weeks for planning.
